Acropora cervicornis (Staghorn coral) pen and ink done for a scientific illustration. Often I will do studies of the organisms in an illustration in pen and ink, large scale (this was 15"x11") and then scan them in, often simplifying them quite a bit when I trace them in photoshop. Not necessary, but I find pen and ink and copic markers a relaxing way to get more intimate with the subject matter, and when it's a coral reef... well.... two of my favorite ecosystems are reefs and mangroves. This piece went into an illustration for a journal article on nutrients and nearshore ecosystems in the Florida Keys.
